Nothing academic to add I just think it’s really important everyone know this was my exact reaction when Whitman thought it essential to add “the scent of these arm-pits is aroma finer than prayer” to his poem:
I absolutely cannot with this poem…

Maybe it’s meant to say something about how the body is greater than religion/spirituality??? I dunno, I can’t defend this one. Sorry Walt.
I also agree that was an inside thought but I’m starting to believe that Walt doesn’t know the concept of inside thoughts.
